Benemocarra is situated on the banks of Rio Iznate near the mountain range of Rengel and is 126 metres above sea level.The population is over 2.600 inhabitants and the main source of income is from the surrounding olive and almond groves and plantations of citrus fruit trees. The town is forty kilometres from Malaga and eleven kilometres from Velez-Malaga. There is a daily bus service to both destinations. The village was probably established in the 12th or 13th century when North African tribes settled in different areas of the Axarquia region. The appellation Benamocarra probably derives from the name of a certain Ibn al-Mukarram and his decendants who were said to be the original inhabitants of the village. The church of Santa Ana was built towards the end of the sixteenth century and the visitor can also admire the hermitage of Santisimo Cristo del Calvario constructed in 1842. Many well know people in the world of religion, letters, politics and music were born in this village down through the years. D.Francisco Lopez Sanchez, in 1781 was bishop of Huamanga in Peru, D.pedro Lopez Muñoz, writer and poet and his brother D.Luis Lopez Muñoz, a well known musician and guitarist were famous during their lifetime and D.Eduardo Ocon was another distinguished musician and composer, commemorated by various monuments in the province of Malaga.
