This picturesque, idyllic village of Moorish origins is situated on the southern slopes of the Sierra Tejeda mountains at 575 metres above sea level and from where you have a ponoramic view over green valleys, towering mountains, white washed villages and the Mediterranean. Its Arabic name meant “The White One”, and its origins can be traced back to the 13th century. The layout of the streets, squares, and whitewashed houses reflects its Islamic past as does the use of terraces for cultivation of grapes, olives and tropical fruits. The main square is dominated by the parish church of Nuestra Senora de la Expectacion, however, you will also find the two shrines of Santa Ana and San Anton, dating back to the 16th and 17th century respectively. Many foreigners have chosen to take up residence in and around this beautiful village settled right up to the huge Sierra Tejeda and Almijarra Nature Reserve .

This is an area dominated by vineyards, almond and olivegroves as well as many irrigated fields where avocados and mangos thrive in the warm Andalucian sun. A healthy population of eagles, vultures, wild boars and mountain goats thrive in the mountains. While centrally located with a population of aprox 2000, this is a nature lovers dream, and the village situated only an hours drive from Malaga Airport and aprox. 20 minutes away from the coast.
