Situated on a southern slope in the foothills of the Sierra Tejeda Nature Reserve 650 metres above sea level and 18 kilometres from the coast Competa is one of the most captivating villages in the Axarquia region. With a population of over 4000 it is larger than the neighbouring villages and therefor a bustling and attractive town, which has been a favorite to many sun seaking foreigners for many years. It is hard to imagine more spetacular views than the ones you are provided with in this village. You will fully enjoy the vistas over green and fertile valleys, whitewashed villages and towering peaks in the Sierra Tejeda and Almijara mountains. And of course as almost allways in the Axarquia, a panoramic view over the Mediterranean, where you would not had thought that the colour blue could have so many variations.
Competa is fascinating to explore with its labyrinth of narrow streets, flower bedecked balconies and charming plazas where the local wine is being enjoyed in the bars by locals as well as the many “New Competeños” coming from abroad. It is a place steeped in history going back all the way to the Romans and the Moors whom have all left their marks in language, arcitecture, gastronomy and not least the way of enjoying life in a warm and sunny climate comprised in a beautiful natural setting that is hard to find anywhere else.
