Sedella as Competa is nestled at the foot of the majestic and dramatic Tejeda and Almijara Sierras. It is surrounded by vineyards, which were of extreme commercial importance in the past, and still are an important element of the local economy. All display similar characteristics and reflect the true essence of the Axarguia region, its scenery, its way of life and history. The layout of the village is a labyrinth of narrow streets framed by whitewashed houses, creating picturesque corners and plazas and gives it its unique identity, highlighting St. Andrew’s Church with the nearby Turret House and adjacent Murdejar tower on the village square. This tower is decorated on one side with fresco paintings and is referred to in documentation as “The Keep”, indicating that it must have been part of a fortress, of which sections of walls still stand, as well as the residence of the lord of the village. Sedella first appears in records in the 7th century as a part of the Bishopric of Malaga under the name Sedilla, however it has been traced back to the time of the Moors under the name of Xedalia.
