Velez-Malaga, locally known as simply “Velez”, is a working town of 55,000 inhabitants, located 1 kilometre inland from the coastal tourist resort of Torre del Mar with its world famous beaches, and 26 kilometres East of Malaga. This is a town of exciting architecture and old palaces, the origins of which go back to the Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and the area is full of remains of those civilizations.

The town is in a wide valley through which the River Velez run, and from which its main resources are found for growing their agricultural products of vines, olives, sugar cane, vegetables and salad crops. You will also find many garden nurseries growing and selling a wide range of plants, trees and seeds. Despite its close vicinity to the coast, Velez has not yet developed a considerable tourist industry.

With its ancient past its historic sites are too many to describe, however, on a hill in the center of the old town, you will find a 13th century castle, Fortaleza, with its 16 metre high tower, built to guard the town and still in good repair as a symbol of its Moorish civilization of centuries past. Velez is ideal for those, who want to live in a combined urban and resort area.
